Should parents have a say in how a couple lives together?

Achieving the balance between pleasing your family and your partner proves to be a challenge for many people. We wouldn't have so many horror stories about in-laws if that wasn't the case. Some parents can have a hard time adjusting to who their kids choose to be with, and some of said kids find themselves stuck between pleasing mom and dad and making the person they love happy.

At the end of the day, few romantic relationships are ever going to be truly secure. That level of risk has to be accepted if you want to be with somebody. Much as parents may want to protect their children from the negative side of that, there is only so much they can do without making a good thing bad, or just alienating their kids. It is important to tread carefully.

This is the opposite of what some in-laws do, and couples tend to suffer because of it. While parenting may not end just after the kids grow up, there has to be some level of trust in them making their own decisions. Too much involvement is almost always going to cause conflict.

A young woman was planning to move in with her boyfriend of three years and make a financial contribution to his mortgage. She thought that his parents would be fine with this, as she believed she had developed a good relationship with them over this time.
However, she was surprised to find that they wanted her to sign a strict document to ‘protect' her partner's investment in his property. After she had it looked over by a lawyer, she decided that she did not want to sign.
